Venn + Maker was founded in 2016 and opened its doors in April 2017. Our mission is to form a connection between makers, retailers, and customers. We value high-quality, handmade goods and the talented makers behind them, and seek to provide our customers with a reliable selection of unique and small-batch products.

We started in a basement storage room with no windows, little light, dusty air, and piles of raw materials. While ideas blossomed in the dark, we sought out the studios, barns, and homes of Maine makers. Slowly we built a collection of art, homegoods, jewelry, leather goods, and furniture.

Over the last five years we have learned so much from our makers, customers, fellow retailers, and refined our collection to more closely align with our vision. We have added found objects to our inventory, as repurposing and reusing is important to our team. We have also been collaborating with our makers to create capsule collections.

Early summer 2020, Michael Fortier, owner of the Washington Avenue
retailer Venn and Maker, invited Vanessa Helmick owner of Fiore Home, to set up shop within our expanded footprint. Fiore Home at Venn and Maker offers modern upholstered and wood furniture—including sofas, dining room and bedroom furniture—and rugs. It is the only retailer in Maine to carry Ethniccraft, a
Scandinavian-inspired furniture line. “It’s a stylistic match made in heaven,” says
Helmick. “My organic modern coastal look blends well with Venn and Maker’s
Maine-focused esthetic.”
